Meet the People Behind the Scenes
Dr Duan Thirion
President
Duan completed his dental degree at the University of Stellenbosch and has been in private practice in the Winelands since 2003.
He has built up his practice, Healthsmile, to offer a wide range of dental treatments and is interested in full oral rehabilitation, aesthetic and implant dentistry. He has acquired various local and international postgraduate qualifications and presented implantology lectures.
Duan is an active member of the Boland Study Group and serves his community with an innovative approach to dental health care and wellness.
Dr Mary Dawjee
Vice President
Mary qualified with a BDS at the University of Limpopo in 2008. She subsequently obtained a Diploma in Aesthetic Dentistry and an MSc in Odontology from the University of Pretoria.
She is currently an associate dentist at The Thinc Clinic in Johannesburg, where she practises her philosophy of creating natural, confident and beautiful smiles.
Mary possesses a keen insight into the applications of digital smile design in treatment planning and follows an integrative dental treatment approach that combines empathy and concern for her patient's well-being.
Dr Corne Smith
Immediate Past President
Corné graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2005 and subsequently completed postgraduate diplomas in orthodontics and aesthetic dentistry. She is the founder and co-owner of Smith and van Lierop, an advanced restorative dentistry practice in Newlands, Cape Town. Her passion is creating beautiful smiles with minimally invasive restorative techniques.
In 2018, Corné co-founded The Bridge Program, which aims to empower and educate young dentists. Over the past six years, she has lectured on several topics in South Africa and is currently a key opinion leader for 3M and Tokuyama Dental.
Being a passionate dentist, she's been actively involved in SAAAD and has served on the Executive Committee of the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (SAAAD) since 2018.
"Dentistry and education are very close to my heart. Through education, we have the opportunity to give back to dentistry and uplift and maintain the excellent standard of the profession in South Africa."
Dr Andy Effting
Treasurer
Andy graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in 1981, where he was honoured with the Henry St John Randolph Award for the Best All-Round Student of his class.
In 1983, he relocated to Cape Town and established the Hout Bay Dental Studio, which rapidly became renowned as a leading practice for aesthetic and advanced restorative dentistry in the city.
Andy is a founding member of SAAAD and has served as an executive member since its establishment in 2010.
He has authored articles in Dentistry SA and has delivered numerous case presentations to his study groups. Additionally, he has been a featured guest on radio and television programs, where he has discussed various dental-related topics.
Andy's areas of special interest include metal-free, minimally invasive dentistry and the holistic treatment of patients.
Dr Ridhwaan Haffajee

As a Co-Director at Matrix Dental Specialists, Ridhwaan strongly believes in a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Both implant and tooth-borne fixed oral rehabilitations are central to his case management.
Sharing and learning play a big part in his passion for dentistry, as illustrated by his roles within various organisations on different levels.
As an Executive Committee Member of SAAAD, his primary goal is to elevate dentistry in South Africa, thereby increasing public patient awareness and appreciation of the dental profession.
Dr Shanné Maree

Dr Shanné Maree is a Restorative Dentist and the proud owner of DENTAL HAUS™️, located in Val de Vie Winelands Estate, Paarl.
Shanné's journey in dentistry began with her attainment of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 2017. Eager to expand her expertise, she pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontics, graduating cum laude in 2019.
Her dedication to the profession extends beyond her clinical work. She currently serves on the board of the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and has lectured for organisations such as SADA, ITI, and SAAAD.
With her continuous pursuit of knowledge and commitment to excellence, Dr. Shanné Maree strives to provide her patients with a holistic approach to health, function & facial aesthetics.
Dr Kesan Moodley

Dr Kesan Moodley graduated with a dental degree from the University of Limpopo in 1997 and thereafter earned a postgraduate diploma in implantology from the University of Pretoria. He is established in private practice in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban.
He previously served on the executive committee of the KZN branch of the South African Dental Association and was actively involved in coordinating their KZN branch congresses and international conferences. Dr Moodley is also a Key Opinion Leader for 3M and has presented lectures at SADA and SAAAD meetings.
His special interest lies in restoring worn dentition through minimally invasive techniques. He practices a wide range of dentistry, including oral rehabilitation, endodontics, and implantology. He is passionate about integrating digital dentistry into modern dental practice.
Dr Chris Traut

Dr Traut graduated at the top of his class from the University of the Western Cape in 2016. He has been in private practice in Bryanston for 6 years, specializing in modern, digitally-driven dentistry.
In 2022, he completed a diploma in Advanced Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. Dr. Traut is certified in interceptive orthodontics, Damon fixed orthodontics, Spark and Invisalign clear aligner therapy, and implantology. He is passionate about the 'Align, Bleach, and Bond' treatment philosophy and the use of digitally guided resin restorations with the injection-moulding technique.
Dr. Traut is involved in the hands-on training of dentists, serves on the board of the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, and is a member of the International Team for Implantology.
Dr Kaveer Ratan

Dr Kaveer Ratan is a restorative dentist specialising in cosmetic and implant dentistry.
He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of the Western Cape and a Postgraduate Diploma in Implantology from the University of Pretoria.
Dr Ratan is a Key Opinion Leader for GC and practices privately at Ratan & Singh Advanced Dentistry in Cape Town.
He enjoys sharing his knowledge and has lectured for the Bridge program, Nexus, and at SADA.
